Description

Affiche Bethanien Berlin

The Poster Bethanien Berlin represents the “Künstlerhaus Bethanien” (house of artists Bethanien). This culture area is located on the place Mariannenplatz, near Kottbusser Tor and Görlitzer Bahnhof.
I drew this urban sketch on the 1st of February 2018 directly at the location in Berlin-Kreuzberg just before a concert and a conference for the CTM Festival.

As a technique I applied wash drawing (ink + water). And as artistic tools I used for the Poster Bethanien Berlin:

  • a sketchbook beige (textured paper, Format 23 x 15 cm – 9 ” x 5,9″-, 125 g/m2 – 427 lb.in2-)
  • un stylo calligraphique ("Pilot Parallel Pen" - 2,4 mm)
  • fineliner Staedtler® triplus
  • 2 pinceaux (fin et moyen)
  • crayons de couleur
  • dry pastels

It was my birthday and the weather was beautiful: sunny with blue sky. I was sitting in the parc front of the “Bethanien Haus”. You can see in the foreground a funny graffiti of a green face where his hair is a bush.
The building is like a church with a bell because it was indeed a closter.

This hospital opened in 1847 under Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Now Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien is still a forum for a variety of contemporary art exhibitions and a packed events programme. Visit contemporary art exhibitions, discussions and artists talks for free.  Regular Open Studios tours offer access to the individually designed artists’ studios. Curators of the art space also offer films and guided tours. Shows focus on street art, photography, sound installations and media art. A former library on the ground floor is now a project space and a café/restaurant . The 1st floors is occupied by temporary exhibitions with some studios for internationals artist and by huges engraving and silkscreen workshops. There is too some dance and music classrooms. Studio 2 is a rehearsal space for actors and dancers. In summer, you have behind Bethanien, in the garden one of the best “Freiluftkino” (open air cinema) of Berlin. I love this place!

History: “It endures as the most important hospital and barracks in Kreuzberg but loses its importance after the Second World War. Its closing in 1970 sparks a heated debate about its future by leftist activists, preservationists and a citizens initiative for nurses. Bethanien becomes known as Georg-von-Rauch-Haus in memory of an activist who perishes in a confrontation with the police. Bethanien is not only the focus of the squatter scene but a cultural epicentre. It gives rise to the German cult singer Rio Reiser and from 1970 onwards births collaborative projects between residents, artists and the politically engaged.” (source: www.visitberlin.de/en/kunstraum-kreuzbergbethanien)
